Studies have also shown that vegetarian women of child-bearing age are more likely to miss periods than meat-eating women, and there are concerns about pregnant vegetarians and vegans not getting enough nutrients for the developing baby. Thus it is recommended that vegan and vegetarian mothers-to-be, as well as nursing moms and their children, follow diets that ensure adequate amounts of calcium, riboflavin, iron and vitamin D, with supplements if necessary, and B12 through not only healthy eating, but proper supplementation and close supervision by a doctor. Children must also be monitored from suitable protein intake for proper development.
Another criticism of the vegetarian diet is that it is harder to get an adequate amount of calories from fruits and vegetables. Since calories are the body’s fuel, it is essential to consume enough to keep your body functioning fully properly. This is especially an issue with growing in adolescence and children, as this is the most important developmental period in their life.
