News from Windsor Dairy (part 1)

(continued from Got Pasteurized Milk? part 3)

To wrap up the discussion on dairy, I am including the newsletter from the local dairy where I get my milk.

This winter, Windsor Dairy is feeding cows a mixture of organic grass and alfalfa hay with organic silage year around with access to a pasture.  The corn grain is part starch and part sugar and fermented by being inoculating with lactobacillus bacteria, which drops the pH and inhibits development of pathogens and adds vitamins and minerals, making it more digestible.  If needed, they will most likely supplement energy from traditional sources, which might include organic molasses, flax meal, and root crops, which are all proven to optimize nutrition for cows.Farm and food collaboration in the works

Windsor is working to-ward benefiting both local small farms and our members. They are talking with five small farms to collaborate with Windsor customers through our normal delivery routes, meaning the food would be brought to your drop off location.  Below is a list of 5 farms they have talked with and think would provide Windsor Diary members with the best of the best. See what you think and contact your co-op coordinator or Kathy (Kathy@windsordairy.com ) to tell them of your interest for now or in the spring. Let’s help make local, small family farms thrive!
